What Is a Plumbing Vent Stack?
A vent stack is the vertical pipe that runs from a building's drainage system up through the roof, allowing air into the drain pipes. Drainage requires air behind it to flow properly, and without venting, draining water creates suction that pulls the water seals out of P-traps. A blocked vent causes slow drains, gurgling, and sewer gas odour.

Frost closure at the vent termination. Warm moist air rising through the vent condenses and freezes at the cold opening, gradually narrowing it during extended cold. It clears on its own in a thaw. A larger vent termination is the permanent fix in climates where this recurs.
