What Is a Water Heater Anode Rod?
An anode rod is a sacrificial metal rod inside a water heater tank, usually magnesium or aluminium, that corrodes preferentially so the steel tank does not. It is the component that determines tank life. Once the anode is consumed, corrosion attacks the tank lining itself, and the heater begins its final phase.
Why warranty tiers track anode rods
The main difference between a six-year and a twelve-year water heater from the same manufacturer is usually anode rod quantity and quality rather than any difference in the tank. More sacrificial material means longer protection, which is why warranty tier is a reasonable proxy for expected life rather than merely an insurance product.
It also means the warranty tier is something you can effectively buy after the fact, by replacing the anode before it is consumed.
The highest-return maintenance on a tank heater
Inspecting the anode every three to five years and replacing it when substantially consumed is the single most cost-effective thing you can do for a tank water heater. The rod costs perhaps thirty dollars; the tank it protects costs well over a thousand to replace.
It is rarely done, partly because access can be tight and the rod can be seized in place after years of heat. In hard water regions where anodes deplete faster, it matters most and is skipped just as often.

Every three to five years, and more often in hard water or where the water is aggressive. If more than about half the rod is consumed or the steel core wire is exposed along its length, replace it.
Can I replace it myself?
It is a reasonable DIY job in principle: shut off power or gas and the water, relieve pressure, and unscrew the rod from the top of the tank. In practice the rod is often seized after years of heat and needs significant torque and sometimes an impact wrench, and clearance above the tank can be inadequate. Flexible segmented anodes exist for low-clearance installations.
